Press Release - DECATUR DEMOCRAT CALLS FOR INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION, NEW CHAIR FOR DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF ILLINOIS
2/21/2018
As more allegations of sexual harassment come to light within the Democratic Party of Illinois, State Representative candidate Jen McMillin is calling for an independent investigation and for Chairman Michael Madigan to step down.
“The steady stream of allegations and dismissals illustrate a pervasive and toxic culture in the General Assembly and the party. If we want to continue as the party of progressive values and gender equality, we eliminate this problem now. I demand that an independent investigation, be convened immediately. This investigation must be truly independent and free of any influence elected officials or party leadership. Additionally, Chairman Madigan should step down. Under his leadership, we have seen multiple instances of abuse, harassment, and subsequent firings and resignations. To ensure a clean slate moving forward, Chairman Madigan should step aside.”
McMillin added, “As a first-time female candidate, I believe the vast majority of those in the Democratic Party of Illinois have the best interests of our staff, candidates, and constituents at heart. But we must restore faith in our institutions to ensure that we have the strongest chance of improving the future of Illinois. This independent investigation is necessary to force a change in the culture of the General Assembly and our political campaigns. #TimesUp for those that harass others and abuse their power.”
